Advection-diffusion-settling of deep-sea mining sediment plumes. Part 1: Midwater plumes

چکیده

The evolution of midwater sediment plumes associated with deep-sea mining activities is investigated in the passive-transport phase using a simplified advection–diffusion-settling model. Key metrics that characterize extent are defined based on concentration threshold. Namely, we consider volume flux fluid ever exceeds threshold, furthest distance from and maximum depth below intrusion where plume instantaneous excess Formulas derived for provide insight into parameters most strongly affect plume. model applied to reference scenario around which key varied. results some sense scale plumes, but more significantly demonstrate importance influence plumes. shows discharge mass flow rate threshold play an equal opposite role setting Ambient ocean turbulence settling velocity distribution particles lesser yet significant extent, can different opposing ways.

Wavefront healing renders deep plumes seismically invisible

S U M M A R Y Since W. J. Morgan proposed that intraplate volcanism at some Pacific hotspots is caused by hot plumes rising from the lower mantle, geophysicists have been actively pursuing physical evidence for mantle plumes. Several seismic studies have mapped low-velocity anomalies below a number of hotspots. However, the association of low-velocity structures with plume tails has remained co...

Field experimental observations of highly graded sediment plumes.

A field experiment in the waters off the south-eastern coast of Cyprus was carried out to study near-field formation of sediment plumes from dumping. Different loads of sediment were poured into calm and limpid waters one at the time from just above the sea surface. The associated plumes, gravitating towards the seafloor, were filmed simultaneously by four divers situated at different depths in...

Cutting through the smoke: the diversity of microorganisms in deep-sea hydrothermal plumes

There are still notable gaps regarding the detailed distribution of microorganisms between and within insular habitats such as deep-sea hydrothermal vents. This study investigates the community composition of black smoker vent microorganisms in the Southern Hemisphere, and changes thereof along a spatial and chemical gradient ranging from the vent plume to surrounding waters. We sampled two hyd...

Mantle dynamics. Sea-floor study gives plumes from the deep mantle a boost.

Earth’s interior is like a pot of boiling water— very viscous, very slowly churning water. The great debate about how Earth’s interior operates to shed internal heat and shape the surface began with disagreements over whether two layers in the pot—the upper and lower mantle—always remain separate, like oil and water. That debate ended when seismologists imaged Earth’s cold, brittle surface scum...

Wavelengths of Gyrotactic Plumes

Bioconvection occurs as the result of the collective behaviour of many microorganisms swimming in a fluid and is realized as patterns similar to those of thermal convection which occur when a layer of fluid is heated from below. We consider the phenomenon of pattern formation due to gyrotaxis, an orientation mechanism which results from the balance of gravitational and viscous torques acting on...
